Heermann's Gull
Larus heermanni
Perhaps our most colorful gull, the Heermann's Gull breeds in Baja California and disperses north in summer - the only North American gull to do so. Most will have left Puget Sound by November to return south to begin nesting again in March. Heermann's Gulls frequently steal food from other birds, especially Brown Pelicans off the outer coast.
Birding Site of the Week
Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge
Okanogan
Marshes, lakes, and small streams constitute the lowlands of the Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge, a 40,000-acre area that ranges from dry forest up to 5,600 feet. Streamside vegetation harbors American Redstarts and Northern Waterthrushes. Move to higher elevations for chances to see Spruce Grouse, American Three-toed Woodpeckers, and Red Crossbills.
